Has Anxiety Taken Over Your Life?

Do you find yourself worrying constantly? Do you spend hours thinking about a mistake you’ve made? Are anxious thoughts making it difficult to go about your everyday life?

Maybe you have trouble falling asleep because you worry about how the day went. You might replay conversations you had with someone or think about how you could have done something better. Hours may go by before you’re actually able to fall asleep.

It’s also possible you find it difficult to engage in social activities. You may worry about what people—even friends and family—will say or think, and so you withdraw to avoid the problem. Or maybe you fear that something bad will happen and cancel plans because of it.

Perhaps you’ve even started experiencing physical symptoms. You may have heart palpitations, chest pain, or difficulty breathing with no known physical cause. These symptoms likely cause distress, but you may not have a good option for treating them.

If your life is overcome by anxiety symptoms, then you likely just want to feel in control again. You want to live the life you long for—without being held back by anxious thoughts and feelings.

Everyone Experiences Anxiety

No matter who you are, you will experience anxiety in some form. It is a completely natural reaction to help you avoid potentially dangerous situations.  When that anxiety gets out of control, however, it can cause problems. In fact, chronic anxiety is one of the most common mental health issues, affecting 18.1 percent of the population.

Chronic anxiety can exist for a number of reasons. Genetics or personality can make someone more prone to anxiety. Difficult life situations, such as taking care of an aging parent, can lead to increased stress and worry. And even everyday issues, such as difficulty in the workplace, can eventually lead to anxiety if not addressed.

The problem with anxiety is that people often have trouble recognizing the underlying cause. They may take steps to alleviate the symptoms, but if the source of the anxiety still exists, those symptoms will continue coming back. And when anxiety isn’t managed properly, it can continue to worsen and bring with it other problems such as depression.

If you’re dealing with anxiety, these feelings of stress and worry can be incredibly frustrating, and it may feel like you’re stumbling around in the dark. However, you don’t have to do this alone. Therapy can help you identify and address the underlying cause of your anxiety so you can live a happier, less stressful life.

Anxiety Therapy Can Help You Manage Your Symptoms

Anxiety therapy can do more than just help you understand the hidden causes of anxiety—you can learn the skills to manage it from a professional trained in understanding mental health. Additionally, you’ll receive support and reassurance, something that can be indispensable for people who have anxiety.

In sessions, I focus on creating a safe space where we can have a conversation about your anxiety and how it has affected your life. You will be given the opportunity to express what you want and need. And I will work with you on an individual level to explore what techniques we should use to improve your situation.

I am very client-centered; this means that all sessions will be tailored directly to you. Depending on your need, we may explore your current stressors, history, emotional patterns, or what you’ve been doing to manage your anxiety. From there, I will help you come to a better understanding of your beliefs and thoughts and teach you skills and techniques to cope with them.

Because everyone is different, I offer a variety of techniques to help you with anxiety. Some of these include:

Psychodynamic Therapy: A technique that focuses on connecting emotions to past events.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: An approach that identifies negative thoughts and behavioral patterns and seeks to change them to something beneficial.

Mindfulness: A method of learning to recognize thoughts and feelings without being overwhelmed by them.

EMDR: A trauma-processing technique.

Using these modalities, we can help you manage the problem in a way that’s most effective for you.

I can also give you suggestions for resources, such as websites, apps or reading material, so that you can develop techniques to use outside of therapy sessions. For example, I may give you information about breathing techniques and meditation so that you can use these methods during stressful life periods.

I have been helping people manage anxiety for over seven years. During this time I have received training in mindfulness, trauma therapy, and treatment for anxiety disorders including OCD, Generalized Anxiety, and Panic Disorders.  I have been privileged to witness many people regain a sense of peace and health as they learn how to manage their anxiety.

My experiences have taught me that anxiety is very treatable. Therapy, in particular, is incredibly effective in helping people with anxiety-related issues. I’m confident, with therapeutic help, you can regain control of your life.

You may still have some reservations about anxiety therapy…

Shouldn’t I be able to handle my anxiety on my own?

It’s normal to need support, especially when dealing with an issue that can easily overwhelm your life. Because you may have trouble identifying the source of your anxiety on your own, it can be incredibly helpful to seek assistance from someone who may see options you might not have thought of.

I don’t have the time or money for anxiety therapy.

While therapy will be a commitment of time and money, it’s definitely worth it in the long run. It can help you learn powerful techniques to manage your anxiety, function in everyday life, and improve your overall mental and physical health. Essentially, by investing in therapy, you are investing in yourself.

I’m nervous about talking to a therapist.

I aim to make the therapeutic experience as pleasant as possible. And I won’t push you to talk about anything you’re not ready to discuss; we will go at whatever pace is most comfortable to you. Additionally, I run my practice alone, so you don’t have to worry about anyone else knowing about your anxiety.
